Nationalist Mirko Sarovic has won presidential elections in Bosnia's Serb republic, his Serb Democratic Party (SDS) said Monday.

SDS Vice President Dragan Cavic said that while only 60 percent of ballots had been counted, Sarovic had already garnered 59.4 percent of the vote, well ahead of his main rival Milorad Dodik, a moderate.

"It is mathematically impossible ... for Dodik to improve his standing as we are 149,400 votes ahead," Cavic told reporters.

Sarovic has campaigned on a platform that calls for improving the economy, creating jobs, helping refugees, veterans of the 1992-1995 Bosnian war and fighting crime and corruption.

He has also called for restoring full cooperation with Belgrade.

Bosnians went to the polls Saturday to elect a president in the Serb republic, deputies to the assemblies of th country's two entities, and to the federal parliament -- BANJA LUKA, Bosnia-Hercegovina (AFP)
