Mayor of Nablus Ghassan Shakaa says Arabs must reconsider their calculations and options in face of Israeli intransigence, and must adopt measures to counter such positions.

Shakaa, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), told Albawaba.com that he believed “it was useful to hold the long awaited Arab summit, particularly at this difficult time in which our people are facing Israeli arrogance.” He said speeches of Arab leaders at the summit showed “different opinions and stands” despite the fact that the previous Arab summit took strategic decisions with respect to peace. “We ask them (the Arab leaders) to respond by fulfilling even the minimum of our demands, and the demands of the Arab masses, and that (their) position should be one and united, and that their decisions be followed up and implemented on the ground.”

Asked about Palestinians expectations from the Arab summit Shakaa said, ”I think the sacrifices made so far could only be paralleled by a complete liberation of our land and country, and the fulfillment of our people’s dream to have a free and decent life in their own land and independent state.”

Shakaa said the relationship between Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Syrian regime should be reconsidered and “should take a more constructive course of action because Palestinians and Syrians have common worries, since both of our lands are occupied, and any positive relationship will benefit and support Arab causes.”

Mayor Shakaa hailed the Saudi political and financial support to the Palestinians and “we value their offer to treat injured Palestinians in their hospitals.”
