Egyptian sources described as close to president Hosni Mubarak expect his absence from the Arab summit scheduled for the end of this month in the Libyan capital Tripoli following his successful surgery Saturday to remove a gall in Germany.

The sources told an Egyptian newspaper that the message carried by General Omar Suleiman - Chairman of the Egyptian intelligence service - to the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi last Wednesday included the President's intention to to have the surgery and thus not to participate at the summit. In the meantime, the medical team that conducted the operation said that he regained full consciousness. In a statement read out and aired by Egyptian Channel One television on Saturday evening, it was said that the president "will remain under care until he completely recovers."

Mubarak arrived Friday afternoon to Heidelberg University Medical Center and was examined by the medical team which decided to carry out the surgery.
