Metito, the international desalination, water, and wastewater Treatment Company, showcased its latest technology and figures about water and water reuse in the Asia Water Summit that took place from the 16th to the 18th of this month in Singapore. The focus for this year’s conference was on exploring the growing number of options in water recycling to ensure constant supplies in the future.
Metito’s participation at the Asia Water Summit further highlighted the financial viability as well as environmental benefits of recycling water. Mr. Nabil Wareeth, Managing Director, Indonesia delivered a key speech and the presentation which covered a wide spectrum of vital topics emphasizing on the reuse of water and the use of highly treated wastewater effluent from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants as a reliable source.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Nabil Wareeth, Managing Director, Metito Indonesia said, “Global water reuse capacity will rise from 19.4million Cm in 2005 to 33.7million Cm in 2010 and to a further 54.5 million Cm in 2015. This represents a 181% increase over a period of 10 years. Today due to continuous population growth, contamination of both surface and ground waters, uneven distribution of water resources, and periodic drought have forced water agencies to search
new initiatives in sourcing water. In many parts of the developed world, wastewater reuse is already an important element in water resources, planning and in assuring environmental protection.”
He added, “Waste or used water reuse is a viable option, but water conservation, efficient use of existing water supplies, and development of new water resources are other alternatives that must be evaluated. Moreover water must be managed as a social good and supported with sound economics. A lack in appropriate tariffs to cover basic production and investment costs will lead to a huge misuse of water.”
Metito also discussed the concept of “Newater”. It was initiated in 1998 as a joined initiative between the Public Utility Board (PUB) and the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources (MEWR).  The primary objective of the joined initiative was determined the suitability of using new water as a source of water to supplement Singapore’s water supply.  Since then, Singapore has built 3 plants with the capacity of 92,000 m3 per day or 20 mgd and the fourth plant is under construction.  The amount will be increase progressively to about 2.5% of total daily water consumption by 2011.
The three day conference was graced by several leading dignitaries who represented key CEOs and Managing Directors of private organizations from within the region as well as the Indian sub continent. The dignitaries further shared their experiences and ideas addressing the ever increasing international environmental and water quality standards and discussed new and innovative environmentally friendly technologies.

Metito, founded in 1958, is a shining example of a Middle Eastern company that has grown to be a world leader in its field.  Metito operates locally in 14 countries of the Arab and Islamic World, and supplies its plants internationally to locations as far apart as Argentina and Australia from its base in the United Arab Emirates.  Some of the company’s notable achievements in 2006 include high purity demineralised water supply for Jebel Ali and Umm Al Nar power projects in UAE, drinking water supply to Kandahar in Afghanistan and high quality water supply for North Rumaylah project in Iraq.
