ALBAWABA - Activist Mahmoud Khalil could be deported from the United States to Syria or Algeria, according to court documents released on Wednesday.
The New Arab reported that a US immigration judge ordered Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil deported to Algeria or Syria for allegedly withholding information on his green card application.
Mahmoud Khalil is a native of Syria and an Algerian citizen of Palestinian origin.
Al Jazeera outlined that court documents, which were released by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), showed that Louisiana immigration Judge Jamee Comans ordered the deportation of Khalil on Sept. 12, accusing him of failing to disclose key information when he applied and secured lawful permanent residency in the US.
"This Court finds that Respondent wilfully misrepresented material fact(s) for the sole purpose of circumventing the immigration process and reducing the likelihood his applications could be denied," Judge Jamee Comans revealed.
However, Khalil's lawyers said they intend to appeal the deportation order, adding that separate orders from a federal district court remain in effect, preventing the government from immediately deporting or detaining him while his case proceeds in federal court.
It is worth mentioning that US authorities arrested Mahmoud Khalil on March 8 for taking part in the pro-Palestine protests at Columbia University last year, amid the ongoing Israeli war in the Gaza Strip.
