The S60 has already made all the right impressions with its sleek and sporty design immediately engaging the interest of car fanatics.
The all-new Volvo S60 had its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on the 2nd March and has just arrived in the ME markets. It makes its entry into one of the automotive world's toughest segments backed by an extrovert attitude never before seen in Volvo showrooms. The all-new S60 has been sculpted to move you – both physically and emotionally.
"The sporty design delivers a visual promise of enthusiastic driving characteristics and I can assure you that the all-new S60 truly lives up to that promise. Its driving properties are better than those of any previous Volvo. What is more, the car's innovative new technologies help you become both a better and a safer driver," says Volvo Cars ME Marketing Manager, Roula Beiruty. With its all-new Volvo S60, Volvo Cars is advancing its position in one of the car world's most competitive segments: CD Premium.
"The competition is razor-sharp and the customers know exactly what they want with particular emphasis on emotional stance, sporty design and dynamic driving properties. Success in this segment means a lot for the brand's image and we are convinced that the all-new S60 will be one of the strongest contenders," says Roula Beiruty.
The first-generation Volvo S60 was launched in 2000. It soon became Volvo Cars' most popular model, enjoying worldwide acclaim and peak sales of 110,000 cars in 2002. In total, there are about 600,000 S60s on world's roads today.
The number '60' in the Volvo model range nowadays indicates their sportiest models. The XC60 was the first step. Now, with the all-new S60, they are placing themselves right on the car enthusiasts' radar screen.
"The all-new S60 has been sculpted to move you. Every single line in its design is there to transport you both physically and emotionally. Its profile radiates so many coupes' feeling that the rear doors come as something of a pleasant surprise when you examine the car close-up," says Volvo Cars' Design Director Peter Horbury.
Promise of a great drive
In its overall shape, the new S60 is a coupe, sportier and more distinct than any previous Volvo. Virtually all the lines were penned to carve out a look that creates a strong sense of motion. It carries a sporty appeal that promises great driving pleasure before you even get behind the wheel. The C-pillar of the all-new S60 stretches sensually all the way to the tail lamps – and the slim coupe-like roof line is accompanied by a new contour on the shoulders on either side of the lower body, creating a gentle yet powerful double wave from the headlamps at the front to the tail lamps at the rear.
The dip in the middle of the double wave visually pushes the car down and puts focus over the wheels. This enhances the stance and makes the car look sleeker and lower. The sculpted bonnet and the short overhangs front and rear also emphasise the sports car feel. The dynamism of the design is further enhanced by what Volvo's design team calls the "racetrack" design. The car's lines do not end abruptly but instead continue to flow organically, continually, echoing the smooth shapes of the racetrack.
Uncompromising sportiness with racing inspiration
Volvo's designers obtained their inspiration from the racing track as they pursued their hunt for uncompromising sportiness in the all-new S60.
"A quick glance inside the car is enough for you to feel that this is a Volvo with a totally different dynamic presence than previous models. The racing track's dramatic yet harmoniously flowing lines can be traced in almost every interior detail. It's an interior for all your senses," says Jonathan Disley, head of interior design in the all-new S60.
The graphic character of the racing track is clearly apparent in the instrument panel and in the doors. The lines do not end abruptly but instead create an uninterrupted, continuous flow.
Safer detection with spearhead technology
The all-new Volvo S60 is packed with high-tech solutions that actively help the driver avoid accidents.
The Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake is a world first. To Volvo Cars' knowledge there is no other car manufacturer that offers a feature that can avoid a collision with a pedestrian.
This radar- and camera-based system can detect pedestrians in front of the car, warn if anyone walks out into its path – and then automatically activate the car's full braking power if the driver fails to respond in time.
LED technology carves out a distinctive S60 profile in the dark
Volvo's designers have also used LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology to create distinctive yet fluid light streams front and rear. The vertical position lights at the front, the eyebrow like side marker lights, the turn indicators in the door mirrors and the position lights in the tail lamps all help give the new S60 an unmistakeable profile even after night falls.
The S60 is currently available with the following variants:

Ø 3.0T (304hp)
From November production (wk46), the following variants will be introduced:
