Lebanese Interior and Municipalities Minister Elias Murr announced Wednesday that his ministry had adopted an International Labor Organization project to put an end to child labor in the country, reported the Daily Star.
Speaking after a meeting with an ILO delegation, Murr said the ministry would start implementing the project on September 16.
According to the minister, all children will be taken off the streets and provided with skills instead of “selling chewing gum, begging for money or cleaning car windows.”
Murr said non-Lebanese children would be sent back to their countries, since the program could only deal with Lebanese children.
He also said internal security forces would be trained, “very soon,” on how to treat street children, adding that Swiss experts would be responsible for working with the children.
Once the street children problem was resolved, Murr said, the judicial police would be entrusted with locating illegally employed children to include them in the rehabilitation program – Albawaba.com
