A renowned Arab scientist has proposed the setting up of a center for genetic studies in the Arab world in order to make progress in genetic engineering, warning that there is a Western trend to deny the Arabs access to the technology, reported UAE’s official news agency (WAM).

Speaking on “the future of genetic engineering,” at the Zayed Center for Coordination and Follow-up in Abu Dhabi Saturday, Abdul Hakim Badran, a university lecturer and researcher, said the Arab world was lagging behind in the area of scientific research although it was Arab scientists who laid the foundation for what is considered today as breakthrough in science.

He said the Arab countries, especially oil-rich states, acquired strong capabilities and that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries could play a leading role in the proposed center.

Badran, a PhD in chemistry with a 40-year experience in scientific research, said universities in the Arab world, which began as early as the beginning of the 20th century could also make a difference in the area of scientific research.

He said there was a lack of coordination among these institutions especially in the Gulf, saying that this had resulted in duplication of projects, according to the report – Albawaba.com
