Kuwait names Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah crown prince

ALBAWABA - Later on Saturday, state media reported that Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah signed a decree naming Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah as crown prince. 

Following a review of the constitution, the Emiri order was issued, taking into consideration Law No. 4 of 1964 concerning the emirate's inheritance, the Emiri order of May 15, 2024, which appointed the prime minister, the Emiri order of May 10, 2024, and Decree No. 73 of May 12, 2024, which established the ministry.

"We ordered the following: Article (1): Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah shall be approved as Crown Prince," the decree reads. "Article (2): The Prime Minister must present this matter to the Council of Ministers to take appropriate constitutional measures,".

"Article (3): This order of ours shall be effective from the date of its issuance and shall be published in the Official Gazette,".

Who is Crown Prince Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah

Sheikh Sabah Khaled, who was born in 1953, graduated from Kuwait University with a bachelor's degree in political science in 1977. 

In 1978, he became a diplomatic attaché in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and worked in the Department of Arab Affairs before joining the Kuwaiti Permanent Mission at the United Nations.

In 1998, he was appointed minister and named head of the Kuwait National Security Bureau. In July 2006 and March 2007, he was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, and from May 2008 to January 2009, he served as Minister of Information.

Sheikh Sabah Khaled was appointed First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in January 2014, a position he held until December 2016. He was appointed Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in December 2017.

Both the order designating Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled as prime minister and the order addressing him as His Highness Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah were signed by the Amir in November 2019.

Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the late Amir of Kuwait, designated Sheikh Sabah Khaled to establish his second administration on December 14, 2020, and his third government on March 2, 2021.
