ALBAWABA - The Lebanese Parliament set January 9 as the date of the session to elect the President of Lebanon amid high anticipation on who could be elected after years of political deadlock in Lebanon.

The Lebanese Parliament has failed 12 times to pick a new president since former president Michel Aoun left office on October 30, 2022.

Michel Aoun, a Lebanese politician and former general, served as the 13th president of Lebanon from October 2016 to October 2022.

Al Jazeera reported that the process of electing a new president in Lebanon requires a two-thirds majority of the votes of the 128 members of parliament in the first round, while an absolute majority (over 50 percent) is sufficient in subsequent rounds.

Meanwhile, Former Lebanese MP and Minister of Justice, Ashraf Rifi, revealed to Al Hurra, that he is confident Joseph Aoun will be elected as Lebanon's 14th president on January 9.

Rifi suggested that he is optimistic that Joseph Aoun has an 80 percent chance of becoming president.

Joseph Aoun is a Lebanese general and the 14th Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces since 2017.
