Under the Patronage of King Abdullah, the Jordan Civil Aviation Authority signed off the agreement to launch the Jordan eGATE. The Project is supported by the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Transport, GID and the PSD in Jordan and is executed by DATEL as a turnkey project.

Queen Alia International Airport Amman, shall be the first airport in Jordan to go live with the eGATEs shortly. The gates have been installed at the airport and are currently being tested for a commercial launch.

The JO-IN ( Jordan Electronic Gate ) is the answer to simplifying passenger travel , by the use of secure check of the passenger’s identity using a finger print and matching the passengers personal information like the passport and residency status. The project shall start with Jordanians as the initial users of the system and is capable of upgrade to be used by all nationals and foreigners alike.

The eGATE shall process passengers through the electronic immigration gate at an average rate of 5 to 7 seconds per person to enable faster and safer immigration at the airports.

eGate aims to speed up passengers' traffic through electronic screening of passengers' data with the help of a smart card.  The core of the system is the e-Card, which displays the user's history on the screen and the fingerprint that verifies the person's identity; dependent on this authentication the user gains access through the gate.

“We see this project as adding immense value to our passenger travel. With Arrivals and Departures terminals going live with Electronic Gate, we see Jordan joining world leaders in safe and secure passenger travel across the region to make the world a safer place.” – Says Capt Suleiman Abeidat ( Director General  - Jordan Civil Aviation Authority).

“DATEL is proud to be associated with the launch of the Jordan eGATE at Queen Alia International Airport, this project adds credibility to proving that safe and secure travel is possible with the use of advanced technology and biometrics in the right manner . This process and the projects of such kind add real world value to the govt authorities, passengers &  airlines.” – Prkash Ivaturi ( Vice President , DATEL)

According to the last worldwide statistics report, air traffic has increased regularly by 5 percent per year for the last 50 years. According to airlines and airport forecasts, this tendency should continue over the next ten years. Thus the immigration clearance process (exit/ entry) for the growing number of passengers will be very time consuming and cause bottlenecks at the airports. In addition nations are considering new ways of collaborating to fight terrorism. To face this challenge DATEL has developed the eGate as a solution after long and continuous research and effort.

While many countries have implemented their own version of the eCard, DATEL’s version has integrated several security measures to ensure its effectiveness. When the eCard is scanned upon entry or exit from immigration, a traveler record, photograph and passport information as well as fingerprint scan are required to match. Any anomalies are caught by the system and reported. However, Ivaturi points out that the eCard is simply the last step off passenger-verification in the airport security process. “The more people that use eGate, the bigger the database of safe travelers. The biggest back-up we have is that the card is supported by the government,” he says. “The eCard says you are someone we can trust.”

As Ivaturi concludes, the eCard is a reflection of a country’s economic growth. “If you want your economy to move forward, you need more people traveling in and out. It’s just a matter of fitting it all together.”
