Jordanian anti-riot police used force to disperse on Friday a rally staged by opposition parties and professional associations under the slogan “Saving Al Aqsa.”
Witnesses told Albawaba.com that the police beat Mohammad Zu’bi, secretary general of the Pan-national Action Party and a number of protestors who set out on the procession from a mosque in western Amman.
However, the police apparently could not ban speeches delivered to chanting hundreds of activists by key opposition figures, who voiced an uncompromising position on Jerusalem.
Protesting the violent crackdown on the peaceful gathering, head of the coordination committee of the opposition parties, Munir Hamarneh said, “it’s unfortunate that the authorities banned us from expressing our opinions and blocked the rally with no clear justification. It is unfortunate that we are beaten and harassed by the government, meanwhile we [government and opposition] should stand hand in hand in the face of the US-Israeli invasion.
“Our aim is never to collide with the authorities but to mobilize the people,” he stressed in a statement to Albawaba.com
Addressing the crowd who gathered opposite to Al Faiha Mosque in Shmeissani, head of the Bar Association Saleh Armouti called for the activation of the Arab role in the Jerusalem issue, and the abolishment of all peace treaties concluded between Arab states and Israel.
He criticized the international community saying that Israel was founded under the so-called “international legitimacy.”
For his part, Ishaq Farhan, secretary general of the Islamic Congress to Protect Jerusalem stressed that the “Camp David treason’s” is a pseudo-failure that is a success in reality, and it is a matter of one or two months before its success is declared.
The Jordanian political parties circulated a statement, which Albawaba.com has a copy of, calling for the revival of Arab solidarity and insisting that Israel “should withdraw to the June 4th lines from all territories it occupied in Palestine, Lebanon and the Syrian Golan Heights.
In a statement to Albawaba.com, Secretary General of the Islamic Action Front Abdullatif Arabiyyat said that pan-Arab sentiment links between all the parties and organizations taking part of the rally, who all stand against the US pressures and stand on Jerusalem.
“Jerusalem is for all the Arabs and Muslims and none is entitled to negotiate a deal on it, violating its sacredness,” he said.
