Shipments of Italian rice and corn oil have begun to arrive in Lebanon's local markets where they are auctioned off, reported the Daily Star newspaper. Revenues are due to go to the development of the south, added the paper.

"This is an answer to the call for help at the July 27th donor's conference. We hope to work on emergency issues such as support for vulnerable groups, basic health care and environmental protection," said Italian Chargé d'Affaires Diego Brasioli at Beirut Port where he received the first shipment.

The paper said the funds, estimated at one million dollars, will support development projects in the liberated south. Some of the goods will be contributed directly as food aid to lower-income families in the area -Albawaba.com
