Israeli helicopters and tanks shelled positions of the Palestinian security forces, also hitting some houses near the town of Rafah at the southern end of the Gaza Strip Tuesday, Palestinian eye-witnesses said.

"Israeli helicopters and tanks from the Jewish settlement of Morag, which lies between the towns of Khan Yunis and Rafah, bombarded two posts belonging to the Palestinian security forces and completely destroyed them," one witness told AFP.

They said the attack lasted 25 minutes.

"Three nearby Palestinian houses were also hit, but no-one was injured," he said.

A local inhabitant said unknown persons had earlier fired at an Israeli military convoy escorting settlers, but that there had been no direct confrontation between the two sides.

An Israeli army spokesman said two soldiers had been slightly wounded by gunfire near Morag and had been evacuated by ambulance.

The spokesman added that two other soldiers had been injured in sporadic violence in several locations around Jerusalem, after which a number of roads had been closed -- GAZA CITY (AFP)
