Israeli troops shot and killed a member of the radical Palestinian movement Islamic Jihad in the northern West Bank town of Nablus on Monday, residents said.

Anwar Mahmoud Hamran, 22, was shot several times in the upper body near an army post in the eastern part of the city, hospital officials said. There were no reports of any clashes in the area.

"Fire was opened towards the army post. The armed Palestinian who opened fire was identified and the army responded," an army spokeswoman told AFP.

Residents said Hamran was a student and a member of the Islamic Jihad, which along with its larger rival Hamas has been behind numerous deadly anti-Israeli attacks in recent years.

He had been released about six weeks ago after spending two years in a Palestinian jail, they said.

His death brings to 321 the number of people killed in more than 10 weeks of Israeli-Palestinian violence, most of them Arabs.

Earlier Monday, Palestinian police said a boy who was wounded by Israeli gunfire Friday in the flashpoint West Bank town of Hebron had died.

Ahmed Kawasmeh, 14, was hit while he was watching clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinian demonstrators from the door of his home -- NABLUS (AFP)
