Israeli police shot dead a Palestinian from the Gaza Strip and wounded another Friday near Lod, east of Tel Aviv and not far from Ben Gurion international airport, Israeli army radio said, cited by AFP.

According to the Tel Aviv-based daily, Haaretz, three were involved.

It said that one Palestinian was killed, another sustained moderate injuries and a third was caught in a police terror squad operation near Moshav Nir Tzvi, west of Ramle. “The three Palestinians were probably from the Gaza Strip and entered Israel without permits. Police said that the three men were wanted by Israel's security services and may have intended to carry out a terror attack in Israel.”

A police spokesman said the police were "acting on information concerning the risks of an attack," according to AFP.

Their Israeli employer was also arrested, the radio said.

Israel Radio, as quoted by Haaretz, reported that the three Palestinians were part of a group of four Palestinians who entered Israel from Gaza assisted by a resident of Moshav Shuva in the Negev earlier this week.

The death brought to 972 the number of people killed during the Intifada, or Palestinian uprising, which broke out in September 2000. They include 761 Palestinians and 189 Israelis, according to AFP’s tally.

In other incidents Palestinians fired a home-made rocket for the first time at an Israeli army position on the edge of the Gaza Strip at dawn Friday, a military spokesman said.

The rocket, of a larger caliber than the home-made mortar bombs used by the Palestinians for several months, exploded but caused no casualties or damage to the army post at the Beit Hanoun, or Erez crossing between Israel and the Palestinian territory.

After the rocket landed two Israeli tanks penetrated some 400 meters (yards) into an autonomous Palestinian area at Beit Hanoun, Palestinian security sources told AFP.

Bulldozers accompanying the tanks leveled an olive grove and an orange grove over an area of three hectares (7.5 acres), the sources said.

Israeli fire also wounded a Palestinian in the neighboring village of Beit Lahia, hospital sources said.

Palestinians also fired three mortar bombs into Israel, east of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, and a forth at the Jewish settlement of Neve Dekalim, again causing no casualties, the Israeli military spokesman said -- Albawaba.com
