The water is flowing again in the Hirmand River between Iran and Afghanistan after it had dried up during the region's worst drought in 30 years, Iran's state IRNA news agency said Tuesday.
The 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) river had been completely dry for nearly a year before the water began flowing again overnight Monday, prompting people to sacrifice lamb and cattle to God in thanks, it said.
Last week the Zayandeh-Rud River, which cuts through the historic central city of Isfahan, also began flowing again after being dry for some four months.
Recent rain and snowfall has helped put an end to the drought, which is believed to have killed more than 800,000 head of livestock, according to UN estimates -- TEHRAN (AFP)
