A suicide car bomber in Iraq killed at least 12 people after driving his bomb-laden vehicle into a security checkpoint in southern Iraq, Al Jazeera reported Sunday.
The explosion took place at the entrance of Hillah city, Al Jazeera added, noting that six of those killed on Sunday morning were security personnel and three were civilians.
More than 30 people were also wounded in the attack, according to the reports.
Some 95 kilometres south of Baghdad, Hillah is a Shia majority city.
Sunday's attack comes one day after an Iraqi suicide bomber used a stolen police vehicle to pass through a military checkpoint where he blew himself up, wounding 14 people, authorities said Sunday.
According to officials who spoke to The Associated Press, the attack took place in Ramadi, the provincial capital of the restive Anbar province, where Al Qaeda militants and Iraq's security forces have been battling for territorial control across the area in late December.
The militants stole a police Humvee and painted it with military colors to ensure it was allowed through the checkpoint, AP reported.
Also on Saturday, police reported that a roadside bomb targeting military vehicles killed a captain and wounded four soldiers in northeast of Baghdad, in the town of Baqouba.
Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures for the attacks. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren't authorized to release the information, according to AP.
Iraq has witnessed a major surge in violence since last April, with sectarian violence reaching levels not seen in the country since the 2006-2008.
According to a UN poll, 8,868 people were killed in 2013, and more than 1,400 people were killed in January and February of this year.
