Three British security contractors died when a roadside bomb struck their convoy in Iraq, a British Army spokesman on Sunday confirmed. The attack took place 30 kilometres north west of Basra on Sunday. Two others were injured.
All five contractors had been travelling in a vehicle which was attacked at around 9.30am local time, according to an Iraqi police report.
Meanwhile, US and Iraqi forces have killed more than 20 gunmen during raids in areas used by resistance forces to carry out attacks in Baghdad, the U.S. military said Sunday. The U.S. military said the raids have taken place in and around Youssifiyah, a town about 12 miles south of Baghdad.
In other violence Sunday, a roadside bomb hit a U.S. military convoy in central Tikrit, said police Maj. Ahmed Awad said. According to the AP, he added the blast set a Humvee on fire and caused U.S. casualties.
On Sunday, two roadside bombs targeting separate Iraqi police patrols went off within a half hour of each other in two areas of western Baghdad, injuring two policemen and a civilian driving nearby, police said.
