Four bombs exploded in predominantly Shiite sections of Baghdad Sunday, killing at least 37 people, while north of the capital, two British helicopters crashed after a collision in the air. Two soldiers died and four were injured, the UK military confirmed, according to the AP.
The two UK helicopters crashed after an apparent collision 12 miles north of Baghdad. "An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident; however, initial reports indicated it appears to be from a mid-air collision and not the result of enemy fire," the military said in a statement.
U.K. Defense Secretary Des Browne also said that initial reports suggested the crash was an accident. "Sadly, two personnel have died and one is very seriously injured. All of these were UK personnel. My thoughts and sympathy are with them and their families," Browne said, adding that the next of kin had been informed.
In addition to bombings in Karbala and Baghdad which killed at least 57 on Saturday, at least 40 people were killed or found dead across Iraq on Saturday. The U.S. military also announced the death of one service member, killed Friday by a roadside bomb in southern Iraq.
