Iran's security forces killed Wednesday seven arm smugglers in the town of Sabzevar northeastern the Khorassan province, reported Iran's News Agency (IRNA).

The security forces, said the agency, confiscated the weapons and ammunition.

Iran had pledged to counter drugs and arms trafficking, and sought the international community to assist it fight these phenomena.

Recently, a senior officer has criticized Tehran's decision to cut the security budget for the country’s eastern borders.

“I warn (the government) that if the security budget for the country’s eastern borders were to be reduced, there would be no guarantee that … the security situation of the border regions (would remain unchanged)," he said.

The region is a transit area for arms and drugs due to its location as a crossroad point linking China with Europe and Central Asia with the Gulf and Oman Sea -- Albawaba.com
