The Iranian navy has arrested 14 stowaways trying to leave Iran via the Arab Gulf, newspapers reported Monday.

According to the papers, the stowaways, whose boats had suffered mechanical problems, drifted for three days without food and water, before being detected and arrested by navy officials.

The men, who had paid "large sums" for their escape to "any of the Gulf countries," via two boats, were rescued in the port of the southwestern Iranian Bushehr province.

Although the men's attempt to flee the country failed, they did however manage to escape "certain death" thanks to the navy's intervention, press reports said - TEHRAN (AFP)
