Iran announced on Monday that it would test fire several torpedoes on Monday and Tuesday as part of its current weeklong wargame drill in the Persian Gulf region.
"A powerful torpedo made by experts of the Revolutionary Guards will be test fired today in the Persian Gulf. Tomorrow, we will see other missile test firings by the Revolutionary Guards in the 'Great Prophet' war game," said Rear Admiral Dehqani in Iran's state television, according to Reuters.
The week of wargames started on Friday.
In February 2005, Iranian officials revealed that they had begun mass production of the torpedoes.
In addition, it began building midget submarines, which it claims can fire torpedoes.
"We are going to have very important news that will make our nation proud in the next few days," Dehqani added.
Iran has a commanding position over the Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Persian Gulf, a major thoroughfare for global oil shipments.
Some have questioned whether or not Iran is using the wargame topic as a means of asserting its power as international pressure mounts against the country's nuclear program.
