Iran has summoned Swiss Ambassador to Tehran Tim Goldimann, who takes care of American interests in Tehran, to protest the interception of its oil tanker in the Persian Gulf by the US Navy, Iranian foreign ministry stated on Wednesday.

Iran considers "these unconventional and illegal measures by the US forces as being in contravention of international laws of navigation in free waters," the ministry added,

according to IRNA.

"Tehran holds the American government accountable for such confrontations and preserves its right to follow up the issue through legal channels," the foreign ministry said.

For his part, Goldimann promised to convey Iran's protest to the American government.

US warships in the Persian Gulf intercepted an oil tanker, leased by the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), on Sunday for the third time in the past three months, media reports said Tuesday. (Albawaba.com)
