Iranian security forces seized around three-quarters of a ton of narcotics in the central city of Yazd that had been hidden in a fish delivery truck, the state news agency said Saturday.
Some 785 kilos (1,727 pounds) of morphine, opium and hashish were discovered when police inspected a refrigerated lorry hauling fish from the southern Gulf port of Bandar Abbas to Tehran, IRNA said.
Iran wages an incessant war on illegal narcotics, most of which come from neighboring Afghanistan and Pakistan on their way to lucrative markets in central Asia, Europe and the Gulf.
In the southern province of Fars alone, police arrested more than 9,000 smugglers in the past three months, IRNA said last week.
More than 200 tons of opium or its derivatives are seized each year -- TEHRAN (AFP)
