Iran and Jordan provided the exciting climax to this year’s LG Peace Tour by holding each other to a goalless draw in Friday night’s friendly tie.
The encounter between the two national teams has been one of the highly anticipated sporting events in the region and the more than 4000 spectators at Amman’s King Abdulla Stadium witnessed an entertaining display of sportsmanship and high-energy football action between the two teams.
The Iranian team was rejuvenated by the inclusion of Bayern Munich’s midfielder Ali Karimi, who could not play in the previous match with Iraq, where Iran defeated Iraq 2-0. Iran managed to maintain their composure throughout the game, employing a more defensive approach.
Host Jordan was held back by the absence of several prominent players who had engagements scheduled with the Jordanian football club, Al Faisali. However, Jordanian goalkeeper Amer Shafi’e was able to the task and repelled the powerful attacks of the Iranian team throughout the game.
The first half of the game clearly showed that the two teams held each other in high regard, and approached each other’s defences warily. The first half of the game acted as a prologue for an exciting second half.
The first 15 minutes of the second half witnessed three attempts to score, two of which were made by the Iranian team, during which Jordan’s Khalid Sa’ad had his best chance, but the alert Hassan Roudbarian was able to hold his fort and make a great save. Jordan’s Amer Deeb made several tries to penetrate the all too powerful Iranian defence alignment that posed as an impenetrable obstacle to Deeb and his colleagues’ daring attempts.
K. W. Kim, President of LG Electronics, Middle East & Africa, said that both friendly matches in the LG Peace Tour 2006 had been appreciated by the region’s football-loving audiences. “The overwhelming turnout during the two matches and the large show of support for all the three teams shows that the LG Peace Tour has succeeded in its mission to spread the message of peace through sports,” Kim said.
