Head of the Presidential Office and government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham arrived at Mehrabad International Airport, scene of the Antonov-74 plane crash, Monday to personally look into measures to transfer bodies of victims for proper burial.
An Antonov-74 plane belonging to the Islamic Revolution's Guard Corps (IRGC) crashed at 7:20 am local time after one of its engines caught fire while it was attempting to take off for the southern city of Shiraz.
The IRGC, in a statement issued after the crash and cited by IRNA, said that 30 revolutionary guards along with the plane's six crew were killed. Two of the plane's passengers, both revolutionary guards, were saved but suffered injuries and have been rushed to hospital, the statement added. The plane was heading towards the southern Iranian city of Shiraz on a military mission.
Deputy head of the Presidential Office for Information and Communications Ehsan Jahandideh told IRNA that Elham came to the scene of the crash to be informed on measures being carried out to shift bodies of the victims from the scene.
Officials of the airport, which is used for civil and military flights, and the IRGC briefed Elham on the event.
