The Imam of the Mosque in Gudermes, Chechnya's second city, was seriously wounded in an attack, ITAR-TASS news agency reported Saturday.

A member of Imam Famzat Odaev's family was also wounded in the attack by unknown assailants who opened fire from a car as he was returning to his home from Friday evening prayers, the agency said.

The imam is said to be close to Akhmad Kadyrov, who heads the administration set up by Russia in June and is regarded as a traitor by separatists -- MOSCOW (AFP)
