ALBAWABA - On international crimes, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and the Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.

The ICC released a statement saying that the army generals are accused of being responsible for directing attacks at civilian objects and causing excessive incidental harm to civilians or damage to civilian objects. The two are also prosecuted for crimes against humanity.

"The two warrants of arrest were issued following applications filed by the Prosecution. Pre-Trial Chamber II considered that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the two suspects bear responsibility for missile strikes carried out by the Russian armed forces against the Ukrainian electric infrastructure from at least 10 October 2022 until at least 9 March 2023" the ICC said in the statement.

The ICC decision comes simultaneously with the EU's announcement of adopting a 14th package of sanctions against Russia, to which Moscow responded with banning the broadcasting of more than 80 European media outlets.
