Yukiya Amano, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said Tuesday he expected the imminent signing of an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program. "We reached, Jalili [the Iranian official who negotiates with the superpowers] and I, an agreement based on a constructive approach" to remove uncertainty about the nature of Iran's nuclear program, said Mr. Amano at Vienna airport on his return from a one-day visit to Tehran, adding that the agreement would be signed soon.
Mr. Amano, who held talks with senior Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday, said the issue of access to the Parchin military complex that Westerners suspected of harboring nuclear weapons research center, would be settled as part of the agreement.
Iran and the IAEA welcomed their discussions Monday in Tehran. Discussions with Iranian nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, were "very useful", "intense" and took place in a "good atmosphere," according to comments attributed to Mr. Amano by Iranian state television. "The progress in the discussions will have a positive effect on the negotiations between Iran and the 5 +1 group" in Baghdad, he added.
Jalili, also secretary of Iran's Supreme Council of National Security, has reported "very good discussions", promising an improvement in relations between Tehran and the IAEA.
While Tehran says its activities are purely peaceful, the IAEA, which monitors the Iranian installations speaks for many years about a possible military dimension of the Iranian nuclear program. The United Nations agency has regularly criticized a lack of cooperation from Tehran to clarify the gray areas of this program. The Agency was slammed by Tehran as being manipulated by the West.
