Hungarian police launched a major search for a killer after four brutal murders within a week in the southeast of the country, police said Saturday.

The murderer first cut the throats of a general practitioner and his wife, both in their 50s, in their home in the southwestern village of Vizvar a week ago.

On Thursday there was a similarly brutal murder of a 67-year-old inn-keeper and her 22-year-old lodger in the village of Magyarkeszi, police officer Laszlo Andodi said.

The two villages are 100 kilometers (60 miles) apart but the murders were "extremely similar," according to police.

All the victims' throats were cut and they had also been stabbed several times, but nothing disappeared from their flats.
