Hind Kabawat: First Christian, woman in the Syrian government

ALBAWABA - Syrian politician Hind Kabawat became the first female and Christian to be appointed as social affairs and labor minister in the new government in Syria. Local media reported on Saturday.

According to the media, Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa appointed on Saturday Kabawat to be the first woman in the Syrian new government.

Who is Hind Kabawat?

Hind Kabawat is a member of the Christian minority and a longtime opponent of ousted president Bashar Assad, who fled Syria on Dec. 8, 2024, after the opposition rebels carried out an operation against the old regime.

Kabawat, 51, was one of the preparatory committees for the national dialogue conference, conducted last month.

Hind was the Director of Interfaith Peacebuilding, Center for World Religions, Diplomacy, and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University, according to AFP.

Who's in the new Syrian government?

Syrian interim president announced forming a new cabinet stressing his commitment to "building a strong and stable state". Ahmed al-Sharaa kept Foreign Minister Assaad al-Shaibani and Defence Minister Mourhaf Abu Qasra in their positions.

Meanwhile, he appointed Anas Khattab, the head of general intelligence, as interior minister. Mohammed Yosr Bernieh was named to lead the Ministry of Finance.
