Local media in India reported that the incident took place at the Baseman mountain top in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir when the gunmen opened fire at a group of tourists.
"I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, which tragically killed five and injured several," said Mehbooba Mufti, former chief minister of the Muslim-majority region.
Mufti, according to the AFP report, is the head of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party.
