Amongst the various matters reviewed during Monday’s meeting in Washington between Greece's National Defense Minister Yiannos Papantoniou and his United States counterpart Donald Ramsfeld was the question of Cyprus.
Papantoniou said he had briefed the U.S. Defense Minister on the ongoing United Nations-led direct talks between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, expressing the viewpoint that one will know by June whether these talks are to bear fruit, according to the official Cyprus News Agency CNA.
"In any case, Cyprus will join the European Union, irrespective of reaching or not a political settlement, and this is something Turkey should know," he pointed out, noting that this is the stand of the European Union as well, CNA added. (Albawaba.com)
