The foreign ministers of Armenia, Greece and Iran met in Athens Thursday to promote trilateral economic and political cooperation, reported Iranian news agency (IRNA).

Greek foreign minister George Papandreou and his Iranian and Armenian counterparts, Kamal Kharrazi and Vartan Oskanian, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to give a practical form to the trilateral cooperation, said the agency.

''This trilateral meeting was very productive and we were able to discuss a large number of areas of cooperation which have moved forward,'' Papandreou told a press conference after signing of the

MOU.

He explained that the MOU deals with economic, technological energy and tourism cooperation, adding that the energy sector was ''of great importance for our three countries.”

''The MOU has reaffirmed our political will, the political will of the three countries and the three governments to continue and strengthen our economic and technological cooperation,'' said Papandreou.

''It also shows our excellent relations, both bilateral and trilateral'' he added.

The meeting in Athens was the fourth ministerial meeting of the trilateral cooperation among Armenia, Greece and Iran, according to the agency.

IRNA added that the three ministers further discussed the construction of a pipeline that will carry natural gas from Iran to Armenia. ''The Greek side has financed the pre-feasibility study of the project,'' said Papandreou.

Iran has the world's second largest gas reserves after Russia, and is the second largest oil producer in OPEC after Saudi Arabia.

In September, Iran invited bids for the development of the last zones in the South Pars gas project, considered to be the biggest field in the world – Albawaba.com
