The German government on Wednesday reiterated the need for a peaceful settlement of the Iran nuclear issue, saying there was "no alternative" to diplomatic talks between the European Union and Iran on securing a lasting political and security agreement.

"Our cause is to reach a diplomatic resolution (on Iran) and we are proceeding well. Of course we hope for a positive success despite very difficult negotiations," German Foreign Ministry Spokesman Walter Lindner said at a news conference, responding to questions on Berlin's reaction to America's latest threats against Iran.

According to IRNA, he stressed US officials are being continuously updated on the latest developments in EU-Iran negotiations.

Meanwhile, Lindner said that German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer is to meet with the new US secretary of state Condoleeza Rice in the US next week.
