German Defense Minister Due in Egypt at Start Of Middle East Tour

German Defense Minister Rudolf Scharping is expected in Egypt late Sunday and in Israel and the Palestinian Territories on Wednesday, the German embassy said. 

During his stay in Cairo, Scharping is due to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, Foreign Minister Amr Mussa, Defense Minister Mohammad Hussein Tantawi, and Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdel Meguid, it said. 

He will travel to Israel on Wednesday where he will meet Prime Minister Ehud Barak, and in Gaza with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, embassy officials said. 

During his visit to Egypt, the German minister will discuss military cooperation between the two countries. Thirty Egyptian officers were sent to Germany this year for training -- CAIRO (AFP)
