France to conduct airstrikes against Daesh ‘in coming weeks’

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drain said Wednesday the country would conduct airstrikes against Daesh targets in Syria within the next few weeks, AFP reports.

France’s air force carried out smaller-scale operations over Syria since September 8 and continues to be part of the US-led coalition against Daesh.

President Francois Hollande confirmed plans to intensify airstrikes in Syria last week amid pressure to address “jihadi threats” in Europe.

The US, UK, Turkey and Gulf nations have been involved in airstrikes against Daesh targets for the past year and were joined on Wednesday by Australia
