Five unemployed Jordanian PhD holders were released on Sunday after being detained since Wednesday on charges of verbally insulting security officers, their lawyer said.
Another detainee, Mohammad Ababneh, is still held in Jweideh prison on charges of physically assaulting a security officer, Adam Radaydeh, one of several lawyers who formed a committee to defend the academics, told the Jordan Times newspaper.
The unemployed academics were detained following their attempt to march from the Professional Associations Complex to the prime ministry on Wednesday.
They clashed with police at the main gate for half an hour.
The disgruntled academics held the march to demand that the government find jobs for them, on the grounds that they should be given priority over foreign manpower in the hiring process at Jordan's universities – Albawaba.com
