ALBAWABA - Three people were killed in a maritime accident after a fishing boat hit rocks off the southwestern coast, Yonhap News Agency said citing the country's Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard and Korean authorities detailed in a report that at around 10:30 a.m. they received a warning that the boat hit rocks near Gagyo Island in Shinan District, South Jeolla Province.

The Korean media further noted three people were found in cardiac arrest, and they were declared dead at a nearby hospital, while the rest were rescued by the Coast Guard and a nearby boat, and their conditions did not pose a threat to their lives.

Meanwhile, it further stated that people who survived are believed to have jumped into the sea in anticipation of rescue when the boat appeared to be about to capsize.

Authorities in South Korea are processing an investigation into the details of the incident.

This comes days after a Boeing 737-800 operated by Jeju Air (089590.KS) crashed at Muan International Airport on Dec. 29, 2024, killing 179 people, and exploding into flames after hitting an embankment.
