The first political society in Bahrain has been approved and registered, reported the Gulf Daily News.

The National Democratic Action Society (NDAS), registered last week with the labor and social affairs ministry.

It seeks to play a key role in helping prepare Bahrainis for the “new democratic era being ushered in by HH the Amir Shaikh Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa.”

"We now need to go ahead with the process of actually establishing a functioning society," said NDAS founding member Ali Saleh.

A general assembly meeting of the society's 42 founding members will be held on October 1, to elect the first board, he said.

The society will have a nine-member board.

The NDAS is the first political society to be approved in Bahrain, said Al Saleh.

"The society is being set up with the aim of supporting the Amir's vision of a democratic Bahrain," said Saleh, a columnist in Akhbar Al Khaleej Arabic daily.

It is hoped the society will play a constructive role in enabling Bahraini citizens to contribute effectively in the democratic process.

"The society is hoping to address a new and important need in Bahrain, to prepare the Bahraini people for democratic life," remarked Al Saleh.

"There is a need to understand the rights and responsibilities of individuals and of the different institutions of a democratic system of governance – Albawaba.com
