Fire kills 2 in Spain as heatwave hits Europe

ALBAWABA - Firefighters in Spain are working to combat the fire that erupted northeast of the country, AFP reported, adding that two people were found dead.

The cause of the fire was not determined by Spanish authorities, but the service attributed it to the heatwave, dry conditions, and strong winds.

It is worth noting that Europe is suffering a heatwave as temperatures are hitting new high records. Schools were forced to close.'

According to local media, the body of one person was found in the southern city of Cordoba, while the second one was reported in Barcelona; both people were working on road work on Saturday and likely got heatstroke.

Authorities in Spain's Catalonia region on Tuesday forced 14,000 people to stay at home after two wildfires were spotted in the province of Lerida.

In one of the blazes, near the city of Cosco, "two people were found lifeless by firefighters", the fire and emergency service said in a statement.

Catalonia regional president Salvador Illa expressed his grief "after learning of the death of two people as a result of the fire".

Spain is in the midst of an intense heatwave, with temperatures jumping over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in several cities and areas.
