Extensive flooding in the southern Philippines island of Mindanao killed eight people and displaced 51,000 others, local officials said Sunday.
Heavy rain had fallen on the island since Thursday, driven by a tropical depression to the east, they said.
Flooding caused a landslide which killed eight people and injured 11 others on a gold mining site on the Diwata mountain near Monkayo town on Thursday night, the officials said.
More than 800 families were displaced in the area, the civil defense office here said. The flooding also swamped the nearby provinces of Davao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Sur.
Provincial officials in Davao del Norte estimated that 48,000 people were displaced after seven towns were inundated.
Half a million hectares (1.2 million acres) of farmland and 300,000 hectares (741,000 acres) of fisheries were devastated in the province, said Mayor Chong Uy of the provincial capital of Tagum.
The civil defense office said about 100 million pesos (two million dollars) worth of timber and infrastructure were lost in Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Sur.
The tropical depression was tracked off the island of Samar in the central Philippines at 10:00 am (0200 GMT) Sunday and expected to cross the island in the afternoon with peak winds of 55 kilometers (34 miles) an hour.
The weather bureau warned residents of low-lying areas to "take precautionary measures against possible flooding," a bulletin said -- DAVAO, Philippines (AFP)
