Some 1,000 Egyptian high school students stoned two branches of the British chain store Sainsburys in the Cairo suburbs Wednesday in the mistaken belief that they were Jewish-owned, witnesses told AFP.
The students, who were demonstrating against Israel and in support of the Palestinians, broke several windows of the stores in the new Maadi district before being dispersed by police.
Elsewhere, thousands of university students demonstrated peacefully on their campuses in Cairo and Alexandria.
The largest protests were at the Ain Shams University in northeast Cairo, where some 5,000 students marched, shouting anti-Israeli slogans and burning US and Israeli flags, an AFP correspondent witnessed.
At Alexandria University's polytechnic faculty the majority of demonstrators were members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood.
Organizers said the protest attracted 3,000 people, who demanded that weapons be supplied to Palestinian groups and negotiations halted with Israel.
They were prevented by police from leaving the campus.
Demonstrations are banned in Egypt but tolerated inside universities.
Battles between demonstrators and Israeli security forces have cost 65 lives, mainly Palestinian, in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Israel itself since Friday - CAIRO (AFP)
