Thousands of university and high school students staged anti-Israeli protests across Egypt on Wednesday, with police preventing one group from marching on the Israeli embassy in Cairo.
Demonstrations were held at several academic institutions in Cairo, in cities around Minya in southern Egypt as well as in the Nile Delta, AFP correspondents reported.
Around 2,000 students from the Technical Industrial Institute marched in the street outside their Cairo campus, chanting "Where is the Egyptian Army?" and burning an Israeli flag.
Police broke up the protest, enforcing a ban on demonstrations outside academic grounds.
Several thousand students staged similar protests at Cairo University and Ain Shams University in Cairo, a day after large demonstrations there, correspondents said.
Students from a high school next to Cairo University staged a protest and tried to march to the nearby Israeli embassy, but police cut them off and forced them back, correspondents said.
High school students also demonstrated in several Cairo neighborhoods as well as in the cities of Abu Quqas, Beni-Mazar, and Maghaghah near Minya, about 300 kilometers (180 miles) south of Cairo.
Students also demonstrated at the universities of Minufiya in the Nile Delta and in Fayum, an oasis town about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Cairo.
Egyptian students have led almost daily protests since violence erupted September 28 in Jerusalem, spreading to the Palestinian territories and even Israel proper.
Around 100 people have died in the violence, mainly Palestinians and Israeli Arabs, sparked by a visit to Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound by Israel's right-wing opposition leader Ariel Sharon – CAIRO (AFP)
