Egyptian PM submits resignation ahead of cabinet reshuffle

State-run TV broke late Friday into its regular programming to report that President Mubarak named Ahmed Nazief, former state minister for communications and information, as the new PM.  

 

earlier, Egypt's prime minister and 34 cabinet ministers resigned, ahead of a major reshuffle of the government.  

 

The resignations of Prime Minister Atef Obeid and the other cabinet members were announced after an emergency meeting late Friday, a Defense Ministry official told The AP.  

 

On Friday morning, the semi-official al-Ahram daily reported the Egyptian cabinet will be reshuffled next week with Obeid assuming a new post affiliated directly to President Hosni Mubarak. 

 

"The current cabinet will meet in full to offer resignation to President Mubarak and a new prime minister will be selected among from within the cabinet or out of it," it added. "New faces are set to join the government to inject new blood into the public performance to help catapult Egypt into an era of technology and information," the Cairo-based newspaper said. 

 

According to the report, some 14 new ministers were expected to join the new cabinet, nearly half the ministers in the incumbent one. (albawaba.com)
