Egyptian courts upheld on Saturday a three-year prison sentence for former president Hosni Mubarak and his two sons for corruption, AFP reported.

However, it was not clear how long Mubarak would actually remain in detention, as both his sons were freed in October.

Mubarak, 87, since his arrest in 2011, has spent much of his time in a military hospital.

He and his sons were sentenced in May to three years in prison for having embezzled $16 million from funds directed to the maintenance of presidential palaces. They were fined a total of $18.6 million.

In a separate trial, charges were dropped against Mubarak for the killings of protesters during the 2011 uprising which ousted him from power.

The prosecution has appealed the verdict.
