The Egyptian army reportedly killed 35 gunmen in Sheikh Zuweid city in the northern Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday morning, Egyptian security sources told a Ma’an.
Egyptian military forces reported that suspicious movement of “terrorist” gunmen was spotted after dawn prayer in two areas “thanks to advanced night vision surveillance devices."
In an area known as Najid Square, the Egyptian army noticed more than 30 gunmen on motorbikes reportedly armed with rocket-propelled grenade launchers advancing towards checkpoints the Egyptian army had recently set up south of Sheikh Zuweid.
Egyptian forces fired artillery shells at the gunmen, killing 35.
The military sources highlighted that the new military checkpoint between the villages of Qabr Amir and al-Kharruba on the international road south of Sheikh Zuweid was intended to prevent gunmen from planting roadside explosive devices in the area.
