At least four members of the Sinai-based militant group Ansar Beit Maqdis were arrested by Egyptian authorities Wednesday over this week's palace bombings, according to Agence France Presse.
However, another militant group, Ajnad Misr, claimed responsibility for the attacks late Monday.
Security forces say the four arrested are currently under interrogation and represent "the most dangerous terrorist elements of Ansar Beit Al Maqdis."
Three of the alleged members were arrested in the southern suburb of Helwan in Cairo, and one was detained in the Nasr City area, according to officials.
However, Monday's bombing at the Ittihadeya palace that killed two colonels, was not claimed by Ansar Beit Maqdis. Another militant group, Ajnad Misr, or the Soldiers of Egypt, claimed the palace bombing Monday evening.
However, authorities have also claimed that Ansar Beit Maqdis is linked to the Muslim Brotherhood which is now considered a "terrorist organization" under Egyptian law. The Brotherhood has denied any association with the Sinai-based group and also condemned the palace bombings Monday.
The arrests come one day before the anniversary of the oust of former Muslim Brotherhood-linked president Mohammed Morsi. Egyptian authorities have arrested many prominent Brotherhood leaders and have raided homes of youth activists ahead of Thursday's one year mark.
More than 1,400 Morsi supporters have been killed by Egyptian forces since last year's oust and at least 16,000 others have been jailed since last July.
