Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher held talks in Islamabad on Monday with his Pakistani counterpart Abdul Sattar on plans for the formation of a broad-based government in Afghanistan, officials said.

"They had detailed talks on various aspects of the Afghan situation, especially the need for the success of the political process as soon as possible," a foreign ministry official said, quoted by AFP.

Maher, who arrived in Islamabad earlier in the day, held talks with Sattar for more than an hour.

"He will call on President Pervez Musharraf in the afternoon," the official said.

Maher is on a two-day visit during which he will deliver a message from Mubarak to Musharraf, the daily Al Gomhuria reported Sunday.

“The message is about the developments in the region,” said Maher, adding that he would discuss the general situation with the Pakistani president. He reiterated that the Egyptian stance towards Kabul was crystal clear, that is, the Afghan people should choose their own government.
